Fungi replace polystyrene packaging
Eben Bayer, a Co-Founder of Evocative Design company has discover and realized during harvesting mushroom, the perlite a type of volcanic glass frequently used as a component of insulation, was also used in growing mushrooms. He has proved during his research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that it might be possible to make insulation out of fungi using perlite.

The company Evocative Design founded along with his class mate Gavin McIntyre is providing replacement for Styrofoam, the non-biodegradable, carbon-intense material widely used in packing and shipping. Replacement materials for these products are made through microbinding, in which local agriculture waste in which amount of ligning will be high and this waste is mixed with a specific type of fungi, within a week the fungus digest lignin and produce a strong biological matrix. The mixture is poured into a mold and then dehydrated, creating the finished product.
